Ravencoin (RVN) was created in 2017 (launched in 2018) as a fork of the open-source Bitcoin code as a way to hold assets digitally and
transfer them easily between parties. That was the specific use case Ravencoin was designed for and is a truly open source project
(no ICO, no premined coins, master nodes...).
So many blockchain projects try to pretend they can solve every problem, or try to offer a use-case for every scenario.
Ravencoin is different because it's focused on doing one thing right - tokenized asset transfers.
The core software that anyone can download for free has a built-in user interface for creating assets. The core software also has RPC calls to create and transfer assets so it can programmed or scripted for full automation.
Ravencoin has several different types of assets that are used for different purposes.
Issuable and transferable tokens with a unique name in the root namespace.
First one to register a name gets it.
Can be indivisible, or divisible up to 8 decimal places.
Example:
APPLE
Tokens that you can create under a token that you own.
If you own APPLE, you can create new tokens under it.
Example:
APPLE/PIE
When you create assets, for example, APPLE, then the system will also create
APPLE! token.
Note the trailing exclamation point. This is the ownership token. This token has special powers.
It allows you to re-issue more APPLE tokens (as long as the reissue flag is set to true), and create sub-assets.
Exclusive rights to register $APPLE (Ravencoin restricted asset/token)
Tokens on Ravencoin that start with $, and can only be sent to the tagged addresses.
Tokens where the issuer has some super-powers to make them compliant. These are best used for Security Token Offerings (STOs), or
Digital Token Offerings (DTOs) in highly regulated regions like the US.
They always start with $.
Example:
$APPLEUsing Atomic Swaps to exchange asset/token for RVN.
